Employee Spotlight: Sherri Mahar

Meet Sherri Mahar, Sales Administrator at Northern Mat. Sherri has worked with us for almost 6 years (in October). Prior to her current position she worked in accounts receivable, and with her combined experience, has become a sales and administrative whiz. Learn more about Sherri:

What motivates you to wake up and go to work?

The drive to do a good job and be successful with my responsibilities! We also have a fantastic team so that always helps also.

What has been your favourite project so far?

I have to say that I have really enjoyed all projects I have been a part of. Since transitioning to this position in July, it has been great to experience and it’s been great to learn things from a different department within our company!

What’s something most people don’t know about you?

I really don’t like to fly. I was travelling a few years ago and our plane got struck with lightning – that did not help the situation!

What would you like to ask our CEO?

Where he sees Northern Mat & Bridge heading in the next 5 years.

How do you define success?

On a personal level I would say happiness. If you can meet your responsibilities in life and be happy, I think that you are pretty successful. On a work level I would define it as exceeding expectations and being appreciated for what you do.

Say hi to Sherri next time you see her around the office! If you’d like to nominate someone for the next employee spotlight, email .

Employee Spotlight: Shaun Lawless

Meet Shaun Lawless, our Saskatchewan and Manitoba Territory Lead. Shaun takes great care of our customers and their unique needs across the prairies, and we’re lucky to have him on our team. Learn a little bit more about Shaun and his work at Northern Mat & Bridge:

What’s your favourite thing about working at Northern Mat & Bridge?

I would have to say that the people. It doesn’t matter if you are a new hire or an executive of the company – everyone is treated like family and that family comes first.

If you could trade jobs/positions with anyone at work, what would your new job be and why?

I love my job and my position; however, I also enjoy hauling equipment – that was my first position when I started with NMB.

What initially attracted you to working at NMB?

The opportunity for advancement is what was the major attraction for me, as well as being able to work closer to home.

If you had a time machine that would only work once, what time period would you travel to?

I would go to the early 20th century. I would love to watch hockey, baseball, etc. back in the days when they played for the love of the game.

Favourite food?

Definitely steak.

Favourite movie?

The Sandlot.

I can’t live without my:

Wife. I know, I’m soft.

When it comes to snacks, do you like salty, sweet, or both?

Not a sweets person – definitely salty.

Would you rather retire on the beach or in the country?

That one is easy: country. A nice little yard surrounded by trees and bush with a creek or small lake close by.

What’s your favourite part of working at Northern Mat & Bridge?
My favourite thing about Northern Mat & Bridge is the structure of the company and the opportunities.

If you weren’t a Supervisor at NMB, what job would you like to have?
I think I would love a sales position. I owned a skate/snow/surf shop for 16 years and I love interacting with clients and providing professional advice and being able to exceed expectations.

How did you first decide to apply at NMB?
What attracted me to Northern Mat is the core company values.

If you had a time machine that only worked once, what year would you travel to and why?
If I had a time machine, I would travel to the time of the construction of Pyramids of Giza.

What’s your favourite meal?
I can’t pick one favourite!

What’s your favourite movie?
My favourite movie is TombStone: “I’m your huckleberry!”

What’s one thing you can’t live without?
I can’t live without my skateboard.

When it comes to snacks, do you like salty, sweet or both?

If you could retire on the beach or in the country, which would you choose?
I will retire on the beach.

Employee Spotlight: Jaime Brito

Meet Jaime Brito, Business Development at Northern Mat and Bridge – East. Jaime has been a part of the team since January 2018. Learn more about Jaime and why he’s proud to work here:

What’s your favourite part of working at Northern Mat and Bridge?
Definitely our people. We have a great team here in the Eastern Division (and the company as a whole), and we all get along very well. Everyone is dedicated to achieving the best results for our business, and our customers. Being part of a dedicated team is very important to me.

If you weren’t in business development at NMB, what job would you like to have?
VP, Eastern Canada. He has a unique role in which he oversees and manages multiple departments of our Eastern division. It would allow me to learn all aspects of the business, and then utilize various skills to help develop and lead with perspective, from all sides of the business.

How did you first decide to apply at NMB?
A former colleague of mine joined NMB, and had nothing but great things to say about the company and the team. Once I met some of the management team, and got to know more about the company and it’s services, I definitely saw the potential in the development role for new segments. It’s been a great challenge.

If you had a time machine that only worked once, what year would you travel to and why?
I would have to travel to Year 0, and meet Jesus. I know it’s an odd choice, but there’s no one that’s more famous or has had a greater impact on generations of society than him. If you could only meet one person, I think the most polarizing and influential name in human history would be the most interesting choice.
As for a particular time period, I would say the 60’s. Many iconic moments; be it landing on the moon, the civil rights movement, technological advancements, the love generation, you name it. It was an interesting time for sure.

What’s your favourite meal?
Everyone loves a great steak or moms home cooking, but if there’s one dish I can eat anytime/anywhere, it’s chicken wings. They always hit the spot.

What’s your favourite movie?
I know it’s cliché, but it has to be The Godfather series. Doesn’t matter how many times I’ve watched it, if it’s on TV, I’ll make time to watch it again.

What’s one thing you can’t live without?
Music. Regardless of your mood or present situation, Music always adds something special to it.

When it comes to snacks, do you like salty, sweet or both?
I’d have to say both. My weaknesses are Ms. Vicki’s Chips for the salty side, and Sour Keys for the sweet tooth.

If you could retire on the beach or in the country, which would you choose?
The countryside. The beach is always great to visit, but having my own little piece out in the countryside is where I would want to retire.

Employee Spotlight: Daryl Northrup

Meet Daryl Northrup, Dispatch at Northern Mat and Bridge. Daryl has been a part of the team for five years. Learn more about Daryl and why he’s proud to work here:

What’s your favourite part of working at Northern Mat and Bridge?
I love the challenges each day – there’s always a new puzzle for me to solve. The main reason has to be the people, though – knowing that I get to work with such great team members who love what they do is one of the reasons I come to work happy.

If you weren’t a dispatcher at NMB, what job would you like to have?
I’d love to be the CEO, or the VP of Operations.

How did you first decide to apply at NMB?
I was out for lunch with a friend and some employees of Northern Mat. Usually when you ask people where they work, they usually have at least one bad thing to say, but that wasn’t the case. It was so refreshing to hear from so many people who loved their jobs – I immediately asked them who to send my resumé to.

If you had a time machine that only worked once, what year would you travel to and why?
I would travel to 1980 and invest in Apple and Microsoft.

What’s your favourite meal?
It’s gotta be steak – I love Alberta beef.

What’s your favourite movie?
The Last of the Mohicans.

What’s one thing you can’t live without?
My kids.

When it comes to snacks, do you like salty, sweet or both?
Salty – movie popcorn loaded with butter is one of my faves.

If you could retire on the beach or in the country, which would you choose?
The beach.
